Dayara Bugyal, a vast alpine meadow above Barsu village in Uttarakhand, is widely considered one of the most accessible high-altitude treks in the state — a genuine reason it's often recommended as a first Himalayan trek.
How to reach the trailhead Barsu or Raithal villages, both near Uttarkashi, serve as the trek's starting points and are reachable by road from Rishikesh or Dehradun in a day's drive, making this a realistic weekend-plus trek without extensive additional travel time.
The route and distance From Barsu, the trek covers roughly 8–10 km one way through dense forest before opening into the Dayara Bugyal meadow itself, typically done over 2–3 days including a base camp night.
Difficulty and fitness needed This is genuinely one of the more beginner-friendly Himalayan treks — moderate gradients, a shorter overall distance than most comparable treks, and a top altitude around 3,700 metres that limits altitude-sickness risk compared to higher passes. Basic fitness (regular walking or light cardio for a few weeks beforehand) is sufficient preparation for most reasonably active adults.
Best time to visit Late April through June offers rhododendron blooms and clear meadows, while the winter months (December–February) transform Dayara Bugyal into a snow-trekking destination, popular for its accessible snowshoeing-style trails.
