Gujarat's Saurashtra coast — home to Dwarka, Somnath and Gir National Park — has a fairly clear-cut best season, shaped less by festivals and more by two practical factors: coastal heat and Gir's monsoon closure. Here's how the year breaks down.
This is the most comfortable and most recommended season for this circuit. Daytime temperatures are pleasant for extended outdoor sightseeing at Dwarka's temple complex and Somnath's seafront aarti, and it's also peak season for Gir National Park, which is fully open and at its most comfortable for safaris. If you want one straightforward answer, November to February is it.
Coastal Gujarat gets genuinely hot from March onward, and daytime sightseeing at Dwarka and Somnath becomes considerably less comfortable. The one counterintuitive upside: Gir's hotter months, right before its monsoon closure, can actually improve lion sighting odds, since animals concentrate more predictably around shrinking water sources. If sighting probability matters more to you than comfort, late April to early June is worth considering — but expect genuinely high temperatures throughout the day.
This is the one period to actively avoid for this specific circuit: Gir National Park closes entirely from roughly mid-June to mid-October for the monsoon and the lions' breeding season, which rules out the safari portion of any Dwarka-Somnath-Gir itinerary. Heavy coastal rain can also disrupt road travel along the Jamnagar-Dwarka-Porbandar-Somnath stretch. If Gir is part of your plan, this season simply doesn't work.
Travellers researching winter Gujarat trips often come across the Rann Utsav — the White Desert festival held in Kutch roughly November through February. It's worth knowing that the Rann of Kutch is a separate region from the Dwarka-Somnath-Gir circuit, several hours further north, and isn't currently part of our Gujarat itinerary. If the Rann specifically is your priority, it's worth planning as a separate trip rather than assuming it combines easily with a Dwarka-Somnath-Gir circuit in the same visit.
| Month | Dwarka & Somnath | Gir National Park |
|---|---|---|
| November-February | Ideal — cool, comfortable | Open, peak season, comfortable safaris |
| March-mid-June | Hot, less comfortable | Open, hotter but potentially better sightings near water sources |
| Mid-June-mid-October | Monsoon disruption risk | Closed |
Our Dwarka, Somnath & Gir package runs across the open season (the itinerary is tagged for winter travel specifically, when conditions are best for both the temples and the safari) — see the package page for the day-by-day plan and current pricing.
What is the single best month to visit Dwarka, Somnath and Gir? Any month from November to February — this window is comfortable for temple sightseeing and is also peak season for Gir's safaris.
Can I visit Gir National Park in the monsoon? No — Gir closes entirely from roughly mid-June to mid-October for the monsoon and the lions' breeding season.
Is summer a bad time to visit this circuit? It's hot and less comfortable for Dwarka and Somnath sightseeing, though the late-summer months before Gir's closure can offer better lion sighting odds as animals gather near water sources.
Does this trip combine with the Rann Utsav festival in Kutch? Not currently — Kutch is a separate region from the Dwarka-Somnath-Gir circuit and isn't part of our Gujarat itinerary, so it's worth planning as a separate trip if the Rann is your priority.
When does Gir National Park reopen each year? Around mid-October, after the monsoon closure.
