A desert safari is the one Dubai activity that shows up on almost every itinerary, and for good reason — it's the clearest way to see the Arabian desert up close, packed into a single afternoon-to-evening outing. Here's what it actually involves, since "desert safari" covers a fairly standardised format across operators, with a few genuine variations worth knowing before you book.
Most standard desert safaris run as an afternoon-to-evening outing, roughly 5 to 7 hours total, with hotel pickup typically between 2:00 PM and 3:30 PM and drop-off well after dark, once dinner and the evening show wrap up. The dune bashing itself is timed to finish around sunset, since that's when the desert light and photo opportunities are at their best.
- Hotel pickup and drop-off (usually within Dubai city; confirm if you're staying further out) - Dune bashing — a 4x4 drive over the dunes with an experienced driver, the adrenaline centrepiece of the trip - A sunset photo stop in the dunes - A short camel ride and sandboarding at the desert camp - A buffet BBQ dinner, usually with both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options - Soft drinks, tea and coffee (exact drink coverage varies by operator) - Cultural shows — belly dancing, tanoura (whirling) dance and a fire show are the most common - Henna painting and dress-up photo opportunities
Alcohol is sold separately at some camps (not all); longer camel rides and quad biking typically cost extra; falcon photo opportunities and gratuities are often not included either. Check the specific inclusions of your tour before booking, since "desert safari" packages genuinely vary between operators on exactly where the line sits.
Dune bashing is essentially off-road 4x4 driving over the desert's sand dunes — sharp drops, steep climbs and sideways slides, driven by an experienced local driver in a vehicle built for it. It's genuinely intense for some first-timers; if you're prone to motion sickness, say so before the drive starts (drivers can moderate the intensity), and avoid a heavy meal immediately beforehand.
Our Dubai & Abu Dhabi tour package includes an afternoon Desert Safari with dune bashing and a traditional BBQ dinner with cultural performances as standard, alongside a Dhow Cruise dinner and guided city tours — so this isn't something you need to book separately if you're travelling with us.
How long does a Dubai desert safari take? Most standard safaris run 5-7 hours, with afternoon pickup (roughly 2:00-3:30 PM) and evening drop-off after the BBQ dinner and shows.
Is the BBQ dinner included in a desert safari? Yes, on standard group tours — a buffet dinner with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options is typically included, alongside soft drinks and tea/coffee.
Is dune bashing safe? Yes, when driven by an experienced operator — though it is genuinely intense. Mention any motion sickness concerns to your driver beforehand, and avoid a heavy meal right before.
What should I wear on a desert safari? Comfortable, breathable clothing, closed shoes (sand gets everywhere in open sandals), and a light jacket for after sunset, since desert evenings cool down quickly.
Does the desert safari include alcohol? Not always — it's sold separately at some camps, not included as standard. Confirm with your specific operator.
