Kashmir in Autumn: Best Places to Visit, Weather and Travel Tips

Autumn (roughly mid-September through November) is Kashmir's quietest beautiful season — past the summer rush, before winter's snow closures, with the valley's famous chinar trees at their most photogenic.

Why autumn is different from summer in Kashmir Summer gets Kashmir's meadows and houseboats their crowds; autumn gets the colour. Srinagar's chinar-lined avenues — particularly around Naseem Bagh and the Mughal gardens — turn deep red, orange and gold through October, and daytime temperatures stay pleasant even as nights turn properly cool. Hotel and houseboat rates also tend to ease off from peak-summer pricing.

Where to go Srinagar's Mughal gardens (Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh) are at their best for chinar colour in October. Pahalgam's Aru and Betaab valleys hold onto greenery a little longer and offer good walking weather without summer's crowds. Gulmarg is quieter too, though the Gondola experience shifts from meadow views to early snow dusting by late November. Sonmarg starts closing down access as winter approaches, so plan an autumn Sonmarg visit for September or early October specifically.

Weather and what to pack Daytime temperatures in September and October are comfortable in layers — a light jacket is usually enough — but nights get cold fast, so pack a proper warm layer even for a September trip. By November, mornings can dip close to freezing in Srinagar and colder still in Gulmarg and Pahalgam.

Things to do Beyond garden walks, autumn is a good season for a relaxed Dal Lake shikara ride (the water is calmer and the light softer than midsummer), saffron-field visits near Pampore if your dates line up with the October harvest, and unhurried old-city walks through Srinagar without summer's foot traffic.
