Sar Pass, in Himachal's Parvati Valley near Kasol, is one of the more accessible high-altitude treks in the region — a common choice for first-time Himalayan trekkers looking for a genuine snow-trek experience without the most extreme difficulty ratings.
The route Most itineraries start from Kasol or Grahan village, moving through dense pine and oak forests, alpine meadows around Nagaru, and finally the pass itself at roughly 4,200 metres, often involving a snow-slide descent on the far side depending on the season.
Altitude and difficulty At around 4,200 metres, Sar Pass is genuinely high-altitude, but it's usually graded easy-to-moderate compared to treks like Buran Ghati or Pin Bhaba Pass — a reasonable first serious Himalayan trek for a fit beginner, though basic fitness preparation beforehand still matters.
Weather and route conditions Snow cover on the pass itself is common even in the main trekking season, which is part of the trek's appeal but also means proper cold-weather gear is essential regardless of when you go.
Best time to trek The main season runs roughly May through October, with the specific character of the trek changing noticeably — heavier snow cover in the earlier months, greener meadows and clearer trails later in the season.
