Vaishno Devi Yatra: Helicopter vs Trek, Best Time and How to Book

The Vaishno Devi Yatra to the cave shrine above Katra is one of North India's most-visited pilgrimages, and the first real decision most travellers face is how to cover the roughly 13 km route from Katra to Bhawan.

Trek or helicopter The trek is a well-paved, well-lit path with ponies, palanquins and battery-operated vehicles available for part of the route if you need assistance. It typically takes anywhere from 5 to 9 hours depending on your pace and rest stops. The helicopter service flies from Katra to Sanjichhat, cutting the last stretch to a short walk — it's faster and easier on the knees, but seats are limited and subject to weather holds, so book that leg as early as your dates allow.

Best time to go The shrine is open year-round, but March–April and September–November offer the most comfortable trekking weather, avoiding both peak summer heat and winter's icy, slower-going path sections. The Navratri periods (spring and autumn) are the busiest, with the longest queues at the Bhawan.

Registration All pilgrims need a Yatra Registration Slip, available free of cost online in advance or at the counters in Katra on arrival — carry a valid photo ID to collect it. Registration windows and any RFID-based queue systems are managed by the shrine board and can change, so it's worth confirming current requirements close to your travel date.

What to pack A light backpack, comfortable trekking shoes, a water bottle, a light jacket for the Bhawan's cooler evenings, and any personal medication — porters and pony handlers are available along the route if you're travelling with young children or elderly family members.
