Azerbaijan has quietly become one of the more popular short-haul international options for Indian travellers, largely because it combines an easy e-visa process, direct flight access, and a mix of city sightseeing and mountain scenery that's hard to find packed into one country this compactly.
Visa Process for Indians
Indian citizens can apply for an Azerbaijan e-visa online, a straightforward process that typically takes a few working days to process and doesn't require an embassy visit. It's issued as a single-entry tourist visa valid for a set period from date of issue — apply at least a week or two ahead of travel to leave margin for processing, rather than relying on express turnaround.
Baku: The Main Base
Baku, the capital, is where most of the trip happens — the old walled city (Icherisheher, a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Flame Towers lit up at night, the Heydar Aliyev Center's distinctive architecture, and a modern waterfront boulevard along the Caspian Sea. It's a genuinely walkable city for its historic core, with the modern district better covered by taxi or metro.
Two to three full days in Baku is enough to cover the city properly without rushing between sights.
Gabala and Sheki: The Mountain Detour
Gabala, roughly 3-4 hours from Baku by road, offers a different side of Azerbaijan entirely — forested hills, a cable car up Mount Tufandag, and a noticeably cooler climate that makes it a popular summer escape from Baku's heat. Sheki, further along the same route, adds the Sheki Khan's Palace and a well-preserved old town with a distinct Silk Road history.
If your schedule allows a day trip or overnight stay outside Baku, Gabala-Sheki is the standard add-on and gives the trip a mix of city and countryside rather than city alone.
Should You Add Gobustan or the Mud Volcanoes?
Gobustan National Park, about an hour from Baku, is worth a half-day for its ancient rock carvings and the genuinely unusual mud volcanoes nearby — a quirky, low-effort addition if you have a spare morning or afternoon in Baku and want something different from standard city sightseeing.
Best Time to Visit Azerbaijan
April to June and September to October are the strongest windows — mild temperatures in Baku and comfortable conditions for the Gabala-Sheki detour. Summer (July-August) gets hot in Baku, though the Caspian coastline and Gabala's higher elevation offer some relief. Winter (December-February) is cold and less suited to a first visit, though Baku itself remains functional year-round for city sightseeing.
Getting There
Direct flights connect Delhi and Mumbai to Baku in roughly 5-6 hours, making it a reasonably convenient short-haul international trip without a layover for most Indian departure cities.
A Realistic 6-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Baku, settle in, evening at the Flame Towers and boulevard. Day 2-3: Baku city sightseeing — Old City, Heydar Aliyev Center, Gobustan half-day. Day 4-5: Gabala and Sheki overnight trip. Day 6: Return to Baku, departure.
